Municipal Museum of Tavira
Time Schedule
Tuesday to Saturday 09:30 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 4:30 pm
The Municipal Museum of Tavira, housed in the former Palácio da Galeria, hosts exhibitions about the history of the county and contemporary artistic expressions.
Located at the top of Santa Maria (Calçada da Galeria), the site of an ancient Phoenician village, you can see here some traces associated with the religious practices of this people. Excavations carried out in the palace atrium led to the identification of several wells carved into the rock and which have been interpreted as “Phoenician ritual wells” from the 7th-6th centuries BC, dedicated to the cult of Baal, god of storms.
The building, of 16th century origin (if not further back), preserves in its structure several Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements of great patrimonial interest.
